It started early on the morning of 17 December 2012, with a call to the Ethembeni Children’s Home. They had not been expecting it and sounded happy to hear from me. We packed the car and off we went, into the heart of Joburg.
We were greeted with smiles, handed over the 19 packages of baby-goods and toys, followed by a tour of the facilities. The facility is home to 60 babies ranging from newborn to 3 years of age. They currently have 62 babies.
It’s a surreal experience going into these homes, knowing that someone has abandoned these beautiful babies and who may or may not end up in a foster home. Most of these orphans are put up for adoption for ….. an international market. Who knew.
The babies are divided into colour-coded age categories, newborns are yellow, 3-6 months green, 6-12 months purple etc.
The babies are sweet, beautiful and innocent and one hopes that good homes are found for them.
Thank you to everyone who supported Annual Toy Drive number 5, although pulled together in a short amount of time, we managed to donate a substantial number of packages to a very worthy Childrens’ home. Thank you x infinity.
